Embracing 40 A.F.: The Glow-Up Manifesto for Confident Aging

Updated: Jan 10

Turning 40 often feels like a crossroads. Instead of fearing the changes, many are choosing to celebrate this milestone with confidence and style. This post explores why shifting from an "anti-aging" mindset to embracing "Forty A.F."—fine, fierce, and fabulous—is the ultimate glow-up. It’s about owning your skin, your story, and your power with grace and a fresh perspective.

The 16-Year Itch: From Brows to Body, and the Classroom in Between

For sixteen years, I have lived and breathed the esthetics industry. As the owner of Femme Jolie Eye Design Studio, I built a career on the fine details—the perfect arch of a brow, the precision of a lash. But in July 2020, two months shy of my 40th birthday, I felt a shift that no tweezers could fix. I chose to close my studio doors, not because I was done with beauty, but because my own body was demanding a new kind of attention.

I was hitting that "40 A.F." milestone and my skin was reacting in ways I hadn't seen since the 80s. Growing up in Ohio, I spent the first fifteen years of my life battling severe eczema. I remember the sting of childhood creams that burned but never healed. Decades later, the cycle was repeating. The "luxury" store brands were full of chemicals, and the boutique body butters were either greasy messes or over-scented masks.

I had three non-negotiables:

  1. I needed a "good-for-me" solution for the Paradox of mature skin.

  2. I needed ingredients I could trust in a post-2020 world.

  3. I needed a formula that could soothe an eczema flare-up without the burn.

When I couldn't find it, I built it. I swapped the lash adhesive for Mango Butter and Coconut Oil. I traded the treatment room for the lab and eventually, the television studio.

From sharing my heart as a small business owner on CNN’s "Pulse of the People"—a moment I’ll forever treasure as the first and last time my father saw me on national TV—to sitting on the set of NBC4’s "Daytime Columbus," my mission has evolved. This year, that evolution took me to the front of the classroom as a licensed instructor.

The "Itch" wasn't just about changing products; it was about moving from the precision of the eye to the poetry of the whole body. Today, I’m not just teaching students how to pass an exam; I’m teaching women how to normalize feeling soft, sexy, and "Fine, Fierce, and Fabulous" after 40.

The Science of Sexy: Solving the Paradox of the "Oily-but-Dehydrated" Skin

In the esthetics classroom, I teach my students that skin is a living, breathing organ. But in the real world—specifically the world of a woman over 40—skin becomes a bit of a rebel.

I call it The Paradox. You might still see the occasional breakout or shine that reminds you of your 20s, yet your skin feels tight, thirsty, and "flat." Most brands try to fix this with heavy Shea or Cocoa butters. While those ingredients have their place, for many of us, they are too heavy—they sit on top of the skin like an oil slick, never actually sinking in to do the work.

Why Mango and Coconut? When I formulated my luxury line, I made a conscious choice to go Vegan and Shea-free. I chose a Mango Butter and Coconut Oil base for a specific reason: Molecular Harmony. * Mango Butter: It’s rich in salicylic acid and antioxidants, meaning it deeply hydrates without clogging your pores. It’s the "velvet" in the lesson.

  • Coconut Oil: It provides that immediate antimicrobial protection and "slip" that makes your skin feel soft to the touch instantly.

  • The Result: You get that "just stepped out of a spa" glow without the greasy residue that ruins your favorite silk pajamas or t-shirts.

Being 40 A.F. means you no longer have time for products that don't perform. You deserve ingredients that understand your hormones, your history, and your need to feel "Soft and Sexy" from the moment you apply them. We aren’t just moisturizing; we are feeding the skin the luxury it has earned.

Real Talk – The Three "F" Words: Why Fine, Fierce, and Fabulous are Non-Negotiable After 40

In my studio and now in my classroom, I hear women talk about "fading." They feel like the older they get, the more the world expects them to tone it down, blend in, and settle for "looking good for their age."

,

At Femme Jolie Columbus, we don't do "good for our age." We do 40 A.F. To me, that means living by a Manifesto centered on three specific pillars. Let’s get real about what they actually mean:

  • FINE: This isn't about vanity; it’s about maintenance as self-mandate. Being "Fine" means your skin is hydrated, your body is nurtured, and you feel comfortable in your own pores. It’s that feeling when you catch your reflection and think, "Yeah, she’s still got it."

  • FIERCE: This is the 16-year veteran in me. It’s the woman who closed one door in 2020 to build a legacy. Being "Fierce" means protecting your peace, being "leery" of what you put in your body, and standing up for your needs—whether that’s on a local radio show or in your own bathroom mirror. It’s the strength to be soft.

  • FABULOUS: This is the energy. It’s the "Velvet Lesson." It’s the choice to use a Jojoba Facial Polish not because you have to, but because you deserve the ritual. It’s about normalizing luxury as a daily requirement, not a weekend treat.

We spent our 20s trying to fit in and our 30s trying to keep up. Now that we’re 40+, it’s time to simply be. ---

Join the Movement: Ready to Decode Your Glow?

If my sixteen years in this industry have taught me anything, it’s that beauty isn't about the price tag—it’s about the integrity of the ingredients and the intention behind the ritual.

I know what it’s like to stand in the skincare aisle, feeling overwhelmed by labels that look like a chemistry exam, wondering if a product will actually quench your thirsty skin or just cause an eczema flare-up. You’ve done the guesswork for long enough. It’s time to move with the confidence of someone who knows exactly what their skin needs to stay Fine, Fierce, and Fabulous.

Don’t just take my word for it—let me show you the way.

I’ve created the Femme Jolie Ingredient Decoder, a curated guide designed specifically for the woman who is done with the "Anti-Aging" lies and ready for real results.

When you join our 40 A.F. newsletter community, you’ll get:

  • The Ingredient Decoder: My professional "cheat sheet" to help you spot the fillers and find the healers.
