Are you 45 years old and still reaching for the oil-blotting sheets? Do you feel like you’re a "greaseball" by noon, but your skin feels so tight it might actually crack if you smile too hard?
Welcome to the paradox of being Oily and Dehydrated A.F.
As an esthetician who has lived with oily skin my whole life, I’m here to tell you the one thing you probably don’t want to hear: Stop fighting your oil and start feeding your skin water.
The Science: Skin Type vs. Skin Condition
Here is the Instructor insight you need: Oil (Sebum) is NOT Moisture (Water).
You can have an Oily Skin Type (producing excess sebum) while having a Dehydrated Skin Condition (lacking water).
When you use harsh soaps and skip moisturizer because you are terrified of a breakout, your skin panics. It screams for a drink of water. But because you are stripping it, your skin overcompensates by producing more oil.
It is like being thirsty in the middle of the ocean—there is liquid everywhere, but none of it is what you actually need.
The Estrogen Factor
To make matters more complex, we have to talk about midlife. As we age, our estrogen levels drop. This weakens the skin barrier, making it "leaky."
Even if you are oily, the water inside your skin is evaporating out. In the clinical world, we call this TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss).
Myth vs. Fact: The Moisture Trap
Let’s clear up the biggest misconception about oily skin.
The Myth | The Instructor Truth |
"Oily skin doesn't need moisturizer." . | Skipping moisturizer makes you oilier. When your skin senses dehydration, it produces more oil to compensate for the lack of water. |
"If it feels tight, it's clean." | "Squeaky" is for kitchen floors, not faces. If your cleanser leaves you feeling tight, you have stripped your acid mantle. |
The Solution: Why I Ditched "Queen Helene"
If you grew up slathering on heavy cocoa butters (like the Queen Helene days), you might have some trauma. I get it. Those heavy, comedogenic butters are a nightmare for our skin type because they sit on top of the pores and suffocate them.
This is why I formulate with Mango Butter. It is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) for oily skin.
It is Non-Comedogenic: It won't clog your pores.
It Fixes the Leak: It provides the essential fatty acids your barrier needs to stop that "Transepidermal Water Loss."
The Finish: It gives you a barrier without the oil-slick finish that ruins your favorite silk blouse.
We also use a coconut connection to help the product absorb deep into the skin rather than just sitting on top.
The "Oily 40 A.F." Action Plan
You don't have to choose between being a greaseball or a prune. You can be balanced.
Stop the Scrubbing: Ditch the harsh, foaming cleansers.
Hydrate First: Apply a water-based serum (like Hyaluronic Acid) while your skin is still damp.
Seal the Deal: Use a pea-sized amount of a Mango-based butter or a lightweight oil to lock that water in.
Instructor’s Hint: I am currently working on a Jojoba-based polish that exfoliates without triggering an oil explosion. Stay tuned!
